How Landry's Was Born

A Message from Our Founder, Lane Plaisance

Growing up, I always had a deep love for the outdoors. As a kid, I dreamed of becoming a farmer, but I quickly realized that path might not be financially sustainable. My mom, a schoolteacher raising three kids, worked tirelessly to provide for us. There were always extra things I wanted to do, whether it was buying something I liked or simply having fun with friends, so I knew I had to find a way to make extra money.

At around 13 years old, everything changed. One day, a man who owned a landscaping company knocked on our door and asked if I’d sell the palm trees in front of our house. I asked him what he was offering, and he said, “$10 a foot.” I agreed but told him he had to remove them before 4:00 PM, before my mom got home. When she arrived, she looked around and said, “Lane, it looks like you cleaned up the front of the house. Thank you!” That moment sparked something in me — I saw the potential in landscaping. The sale of few palm trees started my career.

I started making flyers and putting them on doors around the neighborhood. The only problem? I had no equipment. I began salvaging lawn mowers, edgers, and trimmers from the trash or accepting old ones people didn’t want. I rebuilt them using mismatched parts, nothing fancy, just functional. That’s how I got my first equipment and began working locally.

Eventually, I ran out of yards in my neighborhood and decided to expand. But I couldn’t drive yet. I asked my mom to load my equipment into her van and drop me off in new neighborhoods. She’d ask, “What time should I pick you up?” I’d say, “Come back at dark, I’m knocking on every door I can.” Her van smelled like gas when she went to school, but she didn’t mind. She was helping me build something.

When I finally got my driver’s license, I was free to explore the Baton Rouge area. My first truck cost $500. It wasn’t much, and it broke down often, but I kept fixing it and pushing forward. Year after year, Landry’s grew. During this time, we continued to find both success and hard times, but I never gave up.

I’m forever grateful to the people who gave me my first chance. Many of them are still clients today, and their loyalty and belief in me remain the foundation of Landry’s success. What began 34 years ago with the sale of a few palm trees and my mom dropping me off in a van, has grown into a multi-state operation with over 100 dedicated employees.

That kind of growth doesn’t happen overnight, and it certainly doesn’t happen alone. Every milestone we’ve reached returns back to that first client who took a chance on me. Without that trust, Landry’s wouldn’t be where it is today. I carry that gratitude with me every single day, and it’s what fuels our commitment to excellence.

Our employees have been the driving force behind our success. Their dedication, skill, and belief in our mission have helped push Landry’s to the next level. We’re always grateful for them — not just for the work they do, but for the heart they bring to it. Together, we’ve built something special.

I live by the 5H rule: Hardworking, Helpful, Heartful, Honest, and Humble. Success isn’t measured by growth or profit; it’s measured by the growth and success of your employees and clients. Helping others achieve their goals is what matters most to me. When you surround yourself with people who live by the 5H, success finds everyone.
